Losing hair is a normal norm. We often lose 50 to 100 hairs daily without noticing. Hair loss is not usually anything to be worried about, but occasionally it can be a sign of a medical condition.

Certain types of hair loss are permanent, like male and female pattern baldness. It runs in the family. Other types of hair loss may be temporary. They can be caused by:

– ailments
– stress and anxiety
– cancer issues
– weight loss
– iron deficiency in the body

Men’s hair loss

At a particular age, a good number of men lose their hair. This is referred to as male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. It typically takes about 15 to 25 years to become bald, but it can come earlier.

Treatment for hair loss

In most cases of hair loss, no treatment is necessary since it is either:

– temporary and it’ll grow back
– a normal part of growing older
– Hair loss caused by a medical condition usually stops or grows back once you’ve recovered.
– Permanent or genetic

You can try treatments if your hair loss is upsetting you. However, you have to pay for the treatments since most of them are not available on NHS. These treatments may not be 100% effective.

What are the treatment options for male pattern baldness?

As part of the aging process, it’s normal for men to become gradually bald. Sometimes treatment is not necessary. Note that you will not lose your hair by combing or washing it, so you can continue with your daily hair routine.

In situations where you find your baldness distressing or upsetting you especially when it comes early or in excessive, treatment is the best option.

Finasteride and Minoxidil

For male pattern baldness, Finasteride and Minoxidil are the main treatments. However, Minoxidil can also be used to treat female pattern baldness, women should not use Finasteride.

These treatments:

– Are not available on NHS thus must be paid for
– do not work for everyone
– only work for as long as they’re used
– can be expensive

Other treatments for hair loss are:

Steroid injection – Injections given into bald patches
– Tattooing – Tattoo used to look like short hair and eyebrows
– Artificial hair transplant – Surgery to implant artificial hair on the bald
– Steroid creams – Cream applied to bald patches
– Immunotherapy – Chemical applied to bald patches
– Light treatment – Shining ultraviolet light on bald patches
– Hair transplant – Hair is removed from the back of the head and moved to the thinning patches
– Scalp reduction surgery – Sections of the scalp with hair are stretched and stitched together

However, most of these treatments are not available on the NHS, therefore, must be paid for.
