Malaria is spread by the female anopheles mosquito. The Anopheles Mosquito carries a type of parasite known as Plasmodium. Although there are many different types of Plasmodia parasites, only 5 cause Malaria in people.

The Plasmodium parasite is mainly spread by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The mosquitoes mainly bite at dusk and at night and pass the parasite into the bloodstream. Malaria can also be spread through blood transfusions and sharing needles with infected people, though such cases are very rare.

Symptoms of Malaria

It is necessary to note the signs and symptoms of Malaria, especially when travelling to Malaria high-risk countries.

The symptoms include:

– high body temperatures of 38C or above
– feeling hot and shivery
headaches
– vomiting
– Muscle pains
– Diarrhoea

These symptoms mostly appear between 7 and 18 days after becoming infected. However, in some rare cases, the symptoms may take longer to show.

When to seek medical attention

Whenever you suspect or develop such symptoms during or after a visit to a high-risk area, immediately seek medical attention.

Malaria can be found in several countries in different regions, probably in more than 100 countries. However, it’s common in tropical regions of the world, such as:

– Most parts of Africa and Asia continents
– Central and South America
– Haiti and the Dominican Republic
– Parts of the Middle East
– Some Pacific islands

In the UK, there are no cases of Malaria. However, it may be diagnosed in travellers who return from high-risk areas.

Preventing Malaria

Malaria is not only preventable but also curable. The easiest way to remember these preventive measures is the ABCD approach:

– Awareness of risk – you must confirm whether you’re at risk of getting malaria before travelling.
– Bite prevention – avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellent, and using an insecticide-treated mosquito net.
– Check whether you have to take antimalarial tablets – Ensure you take the right antimalarial tablets at the right dose, and finish the course.
– Diagnosis – Seek prompt medical advice if you develop malaria symptoms as soon as you return from travelling.

It’s important to consult your GP if you’re planning to visit an area where there’s a Malaria risk. Consequently, it is recommended that you take antimalarial tablets to prevent infection.
